MAC TAYLOR

Yeah there was a underwater tremor early this morning and released a bubble of methane and mercaptan gas.

[CSI NY SHOT] [GAS BUBBLE EXPLODES UNDERWATER]

[BACK TO SCENE]

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

Our vic’s this way. Floater, popped up in the middle of a sailboat race between New York and New Jersey.

DANNY MESSER

Oh, I read about that. The reenactment of a race that happened back in the 1600s?

MAC TAYLOR

Yeah. Legend has it the winner got possession of Staten Island.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

Is it too late to give it back?

DANNY MESSER

Yeah, very funny, Flack. Wow. What do you got here, Hawkes?

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

Yeah. Well, based on water temperatures and the degree of decomp, I’d say he’s been in the water, specifically, below the surface for a few weeks.

MAC TAYLOR

Currents from the East River run north to south and dump right into this harbor.

DANNY MESSER

You gotta be nuts to dive in the East River. I mean, wacky currents, no light.

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

Maybe he got disoriented, panicked.

MAC TAYLOR

The marine predators didn’t get to his eyes. Usually that’s the first thing to go.

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

He was wearing a dive mask. [MUSIC IN] When I removed it, found evidence of petechial hemorrhaging.

[ZOOM INTO ECS THROUGH MAGNIFYING GLASS TO PETECHIAL HEMORRHAGING IN DIVER’S EYES]

MAC TAYLOR

Asphyxiated.

DANNY MESSER

His tank gauge is reading at 90 percent.

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

Now, uh, the second and third fingers of the right hand [ZOOM INTO CLOSE SHOT OF FINGERS] are severely fractured. There’s no indication of healing. So, it probably happened around the time of death.

STELLA BONASERA

Which would be?

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

Uh, two, three weeks ago.

STELLA BONASERA

Sid, is that an ear?

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

Apparently our starfish found silicone to be unappetizing.

STELLA BONASERA

So it’s a prosthetic.

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

Our vic had a congenital ear deformity, called microtia, or cabbage ear.

STELLA BONASERA

Hmm. And the metal bar that attaches it to the skull has a serial number on it.

[ZOOM INTO ECS OF SERIAL NUMBER]

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

Yeah.

STELLA BONASERA

Could help us get an I.D. What about cause of death?

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

It wasn’t from drowning. What was left of his, uh, lung tissue, revealed traces of cyanide.

STELLA BONASERA

Cyanide? How was that administered?

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

Oh, the body’s too far gone to say.

STELLA BONASERA

Cyanide induces fatality within a matter of seconds. [MUSIC IN] Must have been poisoned under water.

DEVEN WALSH

Matt Campbell. Doug’s partner. Our instructors team-teach. Buddy system, you know.

STELLA BONASERA

Can I have the photograph, please?

DEVEN WALSH

Yeah, sure.

STELLA BONASERA

Any idea what Mr. Holden was doing in the East River?

DEVEN WALSH

[GUFFAWS] We do all of our open water dives out in the Long Island Sound. I mean, the East River’s just too gnarly.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

When was the last time you saw Doug?

DEVEN WALSH

Uh, maybe two, three weeks ago. He came into instruct a navigational clinic.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

Maybe his partner could fill us in. You know where we can find him?

DEVEN WALSH

Uh, yeah. Here’s Matt card, but I haven’t seen him around either.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

For how long?

DEVEN WALSH

Same as Doug. Maybe three weeks.

STELLA BONASERA

Is that unusual?

DEVEN WALSH

No, uh, you know, Matt, he’s a freelancer, so sometimes he takes off on private diving excursions with the clients.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

We’re gonna need a list of, uh, Mr. Holden’s clients.

DEVEN WALSH

Sure.

STELLA BONASERA

Why don’t you start with the people who did see him within the last three weeks?

DEVEN WALSH

STELLA BONASERA

Well, Flack did a little digging. Turns out that Campbell’s sister filed a missing persons report when he didn’t show up for his mother’s birthday.

LINDSAY MONROE

The fibers of that insulation were encased in an alkylated epoxy resin.

Cortisone. It’s anti-inflammatory medication.

LINDSAY MONROE

Right. For arthritis, stuff like that. What’s it doing in the murder weapon?

DANNY MESSER

Someone reused this syringe.

Low-fat latte, please.

DREW BEDFORD

Hey. Do you, uh, remember me?

STELLA BONASERA

Mr. Bedford. What are you doing here?

DREW BEDFORD

Actually I was, um, just about to call you and invite you down for some coffee. I figured if I was really close, you’d be tempted or at least curious. But now you’re here. It’s incredible. [LAUGHS]

STELLA BONASERA

Uh, where’d you get my card?

DREW BEDFORD

Uh, oh, I, um, I, I got it off the counter at the antique shop. I, I know it’s forward but, you really struck me and I just, you know, I just want to get to know you.

STELLA BONASERA

Oh. Thank you, Mr. Bedford. But I’m, I’m really busy right now.

DREW BEDFORD

You don’t take risks, do you? You’repractical. Rational. Probably an only child. You had a lot of responsibility as a kid.

STELLA BONASERA

You’re the youngest in a family of girls. They pampered you, praised you. I bet they hung on your every word.

DREW BEDFORD

Guilty.

STELLA BONASERA

I gotta go.

DREW BEDFORD

Well, if you feel like that cup of coffee, I’ll be at the Roundtree Diner at eight p.m.

[WALLA]

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

Stell. I got your mermaid printout. The good news, someone did file a salvage permit for the ship. The bad news is that whoever pulled it, doesn’t exist. Phony name, phony address.

STELLA BONASERA

Why would somebody file a permit under a fake name? And if they salvaged something of value, they wouldn’t be able to claim it legally.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

Yeah, I thought that was a little fishy myself.

STELLA BONASERA

So we have fake coins, fake salvage permits. Somebody was trying to make it look like there’s a treasure on that boat. [CELL PHONE RINGS] The question is, why? Gotta go.

INT. NEW YORK CRIME LAB - TRACE LAB - DAY

DANNY MESSER

So after I found cortisone inside the syringe, I got to wonder what else might be in there. I found this DNA.

MAC TAYLOR

Male.

DANNY MESSER

Yeah, but not just any male. Look at this peak right here. At the 12.2 and D7 locus, this is a point mutation, highly specific to Balkan ancestry.

STELLA BONASERA

Hmm.

MAC TAYLOR

You run this through CODIS?

DANNY MESSER

Yeah, but no hits.

STELLA BONASERA

All right. Balkan countries for 5,000. Greece, Bulgaria.

MAC TAYLOR

Turkey, Serbia.

STELLA BONASERA

Wait a second. We interviewed two foreign--

[BACK TO SCENE]

STELLA BONASERA (CONTINUED)

Here we go. Okay, they entered the country two months ago on student visas issued in Tirana, Albania.

MAC TAYLOR

A Balkan country.

STELLA BONASERA

And they quit when one of them got the bends.

DANNY MESSER

Left untreated, the bends causes painful inflammation around the joints.

MAC TAYLOR

Which could be treated by cortisone. All the evidence we needed was in that one syringe.

DANNY MESSER

Boom.

STELLA BONASERA

The killers must have chosen this particular shipwreck because of its proximity to the targets. They used the scuba instructors to help them navigate the currents, find their way around.

MAC TAYLOR

Which they put there.

MAC TAYLOR

Where the hell is he?

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

I don’t know. Information’s kind of sketchy right now. But apparently, there was a credible death threat called in on the motorcade.

MAC TAYLOR

According to U.N. protocol, motorcade security is breached, helicopter is used as backup.
