MAC TAYLOR (V.O.)

Previously on CSI New York.

MAC TAYLOR (ON CAMERA AND V.O.)

I got a few strange phone calls on my

hotel room phone. Hello. Each call

came at exactly 3:33 a.m. Who is this?

Say something, damn it. My luggage was

stolen. When I finally received it, I

found this inside. This building is

the Tribune Tower in Chicago. It all

makes sense now. Over the years, 136

stones have been added to the Tribune

Tower’s ground level from world

landmarks, including the Redwood

Forest, Hagia Sophia and the Alamo. He

sent me pieces of each of them. That’s

where he wants me to go.

LINDSAY MONROE

Mac say when he’d be back from Chicago?

STELLA BONASERA

No, but you know Mac. He’s not getting

on a plane until he gets some answers.

DANNY MESSER

And he thinks those answers are in

Chicago?

STELLA BONASERA

Well, that’s where the evidence led

him.

LINDSAY MONROE

So this 3-3-3 guy, is he someone Mac

put away?

STELLA BONASERA

Don’t know who he is, exactly.

DANNY MESSER

Could be a woman.

LINDSAY MONROE

Danny, no woman wakes up at 3:33 to

make an anonymous phone call.

DANNY MESSER

Sure about that?

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

DOA is Kevin Carmichael, train

operator. Reports of an empty train

blowing through stations caught the

MTA’s attention.

STELLA BONASERA

How many stations did he pass through?

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

All of ‘em. Looks like the train was

hijacked up in the rail yard and for

whatever reason, stopped here. People

waiting on the platform were treated to

this.

DANNY MESSER

Ouch.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

No sign of our perp. And I got my guys

up at the rail yard doing a canvass.

STELLA BONASERA

Hey.

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

Hey. Looks like this is where it

started and ended. Perp ambushes the

operator, hits him in the head multiple

cast-off pattern.

LINDSAY MONROE

Then for good measure hurls him through

the window? That’s not easy. That

takes a lot of force.

CSI: NEW YORK - “The Thing About Heroes…” - Eps. #410 - Page 4

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

We ruled out robbery. The vic’s wallet

and watch weren’t taken and the

attack’s too brutal to be random, so

we’re looking into a more personal

motive.

STELLA BONASERA

All right, Danny, you and Lindsay are

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

Hey, Brooks. You wanna tell me who

help me God…

LINDSAY MONROE

I have a feeling we’re going for a

STELLA BONASERA

Whoa.

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

Oh, I thought this train was empty.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

Damn it, Brooks. Stop the train!

Hey, Danny! Call the Train Master’s

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

Stella, nothing.

STELLA BONASERA

Hey, Flack, try the other emergency

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

It’s stripped!

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

This is no practical joke.

BROOKS

You gotta shut down the Three Train.

MTA OPERATOR (V.O.)

It’s not responding. You gotta do it

from up there. There’s a control box

about a 100 yards down the tunnel. You

better hurry up and shut it down before

it plows into the train in front of it,

okay? Now, the power source is on the

I didn’t know what I’d find.

DETECTIVE RENEE BRENNAN

I was sent here. I don’t know why or

STELLA BONASERA

Briefly. He found a body at the

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

[QUIETLY TO STELLA] This can’t be

CHIEF OF DETECTIVES BRIGHAM SINCLAIR

I received some very interesting phone

calls this morning. One in particular

got my attention. The police

commissioner wanted to know why a

member of our crime lab is

investigating a murder in Chicago. Of

course I told him that’s impossible,

because I didn’t know a damn thing

about it.

STELLA BONASERA

Mac is in Chicago on personal business.

CHIEF OF DETECTIVES BRIGHAM SINCLAIR

How personal is it?

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

That’s what he’s trying to figure out.

CHIEF OF DETECTIVES BRIGHAM SINCLAIR

Is he in trouble?

STELLA BONASERA

No.

CHIEF OF DETECTIVES BRIGHAM SINCLAIR

[TO STELLA] Then you tell Taylor he’s

got twelve hours and then I want his

Detective. Be careful you don’t cross

it. [TO FLACK] Walk with me.

INT. NEW YORK CRIME LAB - PRINT LAB - DAY

[DANNY FINDS A PRINT ON THE MP3 PLAYER]

ADAM ROSS

Hmm. This is amazing. I mean, really

amazing. This little MP3 gadget, uh,

I, it’s, it’s, it’s amazing.

DANNY MESSER

Yeah, yeah. You realize there was a

crime committed here though, right?

ADAM ROSS

Yeah, but that’s what’s so great about

this little gadget here. You know,

millions of people are wandering around

with compact hard drives able to

download almost anything. This was

hooked up to the subway’s digital

control system, operating as an

external hard drive, rebooted the

system and then ran its own

application.

DANNY MESSER

That explains the runaway train, but

why didn’t the train master’s office

cut off the power and just stop it?

CSI: NEW YORK - “The Thing About Heroes…” - Eps. #410 - Page 19

ADAM ROSS

Because this little creature here not

only ran its own program, but its fire

wire allowed for an extremely fast

upload of a very large virus that

infected the entire system. And once

it got control of the train’s master’s

office, I mean, it was just game over.

DANNY MESSER

So we’re looking for a killer that is

some sort of gadget genius here?

ADAM ROSS

He had a little bit of help. Check

this out. All right? There was a URL

in the code.

DANNY MESSER

He got his help from a flower delivery

company?

ADAM ROSS

You are so impatient. [THE FLOWER

DELIVERY WEBSITE EXPLODES INTO A HACKER

WEBSITE] Nirvana for the everyday

hacker.

DANNY MESSER

That’s for real.

ADAM ROSS

Huh.

DANNY MESSER

A website that tells you how to hijack

a subway train?

ADAM ROSS

These are instructions on how to use

every day, ordinary electronics to hack

into databases, security codes, even

arena scoreboards. Basically, you

purchase the override codes and you can

take over the world.

CSI: NEW YORK - “The Thing About Heroes…” - Eps. #410 - Page 20

DANNY MESSER

DETECTIVE RENEE BRENNAN

Okay, I deserve that. Preliminary

autopsy report. Our hangman is a white

male, died in his mid-twenties.

MAC TAYLOR

When was that?

DETECTIVE RENEE BRENNAN

Pathologist estimates 30 years ago.

Traces of soil on his teeth suggest the

body was buried, then dug up.

CSI: NEW YORK - “The Thing About Heroes…” - Eps. #410 - Page 21

MAC TAYLOR

Which explains the partial

mummification. The vic must have been

moved to a dark, dry place which slowed

decomposition. Got a cause of death?

DETECTIVE RENEE BRENNAN

Gunshot wound to the stomach, through

the liver and out. Uh, there are two

other visible fractures. Blunt force

to the skull, postmortem, more than

likely occurred when the body was dug

up. Scar tissue tells us that the

second injury was pre-mortem. An index

finger was sawed off.

MAC TAYLOR

You got an I.D.?

DETECTIVE RENEE BRENNAN

Fingertips were too decomposed for

prints, and as you know, 30 years ago

CODIS didn’t exist. So, if he

committed a felony, there’s no

possibility for a DNA match.

MAC TAYLOR

What about running a sample through the

JIMMIE DAVIS

[OVERLAPPING] No, I don’t imagine that

watch him crumble to his knees. You

didn’t spend ten years trying to make

brother, lying to little Andy about how

Will died. Not you.

MAC TAYLOR

Did you send me that shirt, Jimmie?

JIMMIE DAVIS

MAC TAYLOR

Will worked as a paperboy for the

I have forensic evidence, Jimmie, and

it points to Will’s brother, that’s

you. You and I were the only ones

there.

JIMMIE DAVIS

You don’t know what the hell you’re

talking about. You hear me, Mac? I

had nothing to do with what you’re

to notify us of any symptoms of anthrax

poisoning. And we’re sweeping the

subway cars well as the 42

LINDSAY MONROE

Now, I did find the darker

discolorations on the fabric of the

victim’s shirt. Turned out to be

burns--

anthrax. I analyzed a swatch, detected

traces of muriatic acid. Turns out our

vic, Kevin Carmichael, is a custom-made

explain why the anthrax--

DANNY MESSER

Any other prints beside the one I

pulled from the MP3 player?

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

They’re all over the place, on the

victim and the train. The DNA from the

prints are all a match to the blood on

the New York City puzzle, an unknown

male. This is all one suspect.

LINDSAY MONROE

With no previous criminal history so,

no hits in AFIS or CODIS.

DANNY MESSER

This guy’s cocky, you know. He didn’t

wear gloves, he leaves his prints.

Know we can’t use ‘em, but it’s kind of

like he’s trying to get caught.

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

Maybe that’s part of his endgame.

a filial match to the T-shirt. So

we’re dealing with a brother but it’s

not Jimmie. That leaves Will’s

youngest brother, Andy. That doesn’t

make sense. Andy wasn’t there.

No. How can there be nothing? No

LINDSAY MONROE

Well, let’s go over it again. Where do

you want me to start?

STELLA BONASERA

I, I don’t know, Lindsay. I mean, look

at all this stuff. All these puzzle

pieces and clues that were sent to Mac.

There’s got to be something in here.

You know? This, this guy wants us to

find him. He’s got a plan. Wait a

STELLA BONASERA

Lindsay, he dumped the New York puzzle

should have had green X’s on it, not

blue. We hadn’t even gotten the

Tribune puzzle yet.

LINDSAY MONROE

So wait a minute, Stella. Are you

saying that this Drew Bedford guy’s

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

I’ve passed through there. Trains

LINDSAY MONROE

So that’s where Drew has Mac?

STELLA BONASERA

We think so. Track Six. Train to

DANNY MESSER

Nobody really knows about the abandoned
