Résumé :

Un individu se faisant appeler Joe prend en otage les clients et le personnel d'une banque après un hold-up raté. En échange de la libération d'un otage, il réclame la présence d'un membre des CSIs, pour prouver qu'il n'est pas le responsable du meurtre du directeur de la banque, trouvé dans la salle des coffres. Mac se rend donc sur les lieux, et sous pression, tente de rassembler le maximum d'indices. Régulièrement, il s'entretient avec le reste de l'équipe par téléphone : le légiste fait une autopsie virtuelle, pendant que Flack et Stella tente d'empêcher l'unité d'élite d'intervenir...

--just showing up from work when our perp enters the bank cowboy-style.

[GUNSHOT]

GUNMAN/”JOE”

Everybody on the ground. On the ground! Now, everybody on the ground.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK (V.O.)

Gets everyone on the ground then heads toward the open vault. At which point, a teller trips a silent alarm--

DETECTIVE DON FLACK (CONTINUED)

--the response is immediate, trapping the perp inside, which is when he decides to go “Dog Day Afternoon.”

STELLA BONASERA

Got an I.D.?

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

All we know is he’s male white, approximately 40 years old, armed and definitely dangerous. He already killed someone inside.

STELLA BONASERA

He shot a hostage?

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

Details are sketchy, but the witnesses who got out say they heard a gunshot--

[FLASHBACK]

DETECTIVE DON FLACK (V.O.) (CONTINUED)

--then saw a body down on the floor in the vault.

[SCREAMS]

[BACK TO SCENE]

STELLA BONASERA

Jesus. Where’s Mac?

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

With the body.

STELLA BONASERA

Oh, you gotta be kidding.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

This ain’t your everyday bank robbery, Stell. This guy made three demands. Unmarked police car, no press and somebody from Crime Scene.

STELLA BONASERA

He wanted one of us?

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

He swears he didn’t kill the guy inside and he wants someone in there to prove he’s not a murderer.

STELLA BONASERA

So Mac agreed to meet one of his demands.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

In exchange for a hostage.

Oh, this guy is smart. Now he’s got a cop for insurance.

I need to use a computer, send these crime scene photos back to my lab to be analyzed.

How are pictures of a dead guy gonna prove I’m innocent?

MAC TAYLOR

They’re a permanent record of the crime scene in its original condition and I can’t start processing the body or have my team analyze evidence without this type of documentation.

[MAC CONNECTS THE CAMERA TO THE COMPUTER]

MAC TAYLOR

[CELL PHONE RINGS]

GUNMAN/”JOE” (CONTINUED)

STELLA BONASERA

Mac just sent over these photos from the crime scene. Our vic is male, approximately 45 years old. Looks like a single gunshot wound.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

Let’s put him in front of some witnesses, maybe we can get an I.D.

[STELLA PRINTS OUT A SHOT OF THE VICTIM’S FACE]

EXT. BANK - HRT COMMAND - DAY

[STELLA AND FLACK SHOW THE PHOTO TO TALIA]

TALIA KIRKFIELD

Oh, my God. That’s Walter Sutherford, the bank manager.

STELLA BONASERA

Tell me, did you see Mr. Sutherford engage the gunman?

TALIA KIRKFIELD

No. I heard someone say that they saw a body in the vault, but I didn’t see Mr. Sutherford get shot.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

Thank you. Of all the witnesses who got out, no one saw our bad guy pull the trigger.

STELLA BONASERA

It’s Mac’s job.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

I’ll send someone to Sutherford’s house to make the notification.

RICHARD JACKSON

Detectives.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

Where are we at with the surveillance tapes?

RICHARD JACKSON

One of my guys just talked to the main branch, just a few minutes ago. The surveillance feed is piped right into the manager’s office.

STELLA BONASERA

Okay. So Mac has access to them.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

If the gunman lets him.

RICHARD JACKSON

Got NY Power ready to shut down the juice.

STELLA BONASERA

You can’t do that. Mac is still processing the scene.

RICHARD JACKSON

Hey, Detective, all due respect, that’s an active crime scene. If we’re not gonna make entry, we’ve gotta do something. Making it uncomfortable for this guy is our only leverage.

STELLA BONASERA

I understand that. But see, if you turn off the air, that body will start decomposing so fast, we’ll lose all our evidence.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

And maybe our only chance of resolving this peacefully.

RICHARD JACKSON

Then tell Detective Taylor to work a little faster. He’s got two hours to process then we gon’ start getting proactive, a’right?

INT. BANK - VAULT - DAY

GUNMAN/”JOE”

What are you looking for?

MAC TAYLOR

Foreign DNA. Evidence left behind by an attacker. This man has defensive wounds. Indicates there was a struggle. How long you been married? I was married once. Nice to have someone who cares about you

GUNMAN/”JOE”

Yeah. But you think you’re gonna get into my head, Detective, is that it? Bring up my wife, tell me how much she loves me and how I shouldn’t be doing this?

MAC TAYLOR

All I’m getting at is if you didn’t kill this man, then maybe this can still work out in your favor.

GUNMAN/”JOE”

No, it’ll work out. If you do your job correctly, it’ll work out.

EXT. BANK - DAY

[WALLA]

[CELL PHONE RINGS]

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

It’s him. [INTO CELL PHONE] Yeah.

INT. BANK - LOBBY - DAY

GUNMAN/”JOE”

Where’s my police car?

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

(V.O.) We’re working on it. I got (ON CAMERA) a mechanic disabling the GPS

(V.O.) per your request.

GUNMAN/”JOE”

I can still see the media. I thought I told you to get ‘em outta here.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

(V.O.) Look, we’re trying, but you and (ON CAMERA) I both know this is the best game in town and people wanna watch.

GUNMAN/”JOE”

Ah, well then let’s hope the kids are out of the room when I start tossing bodies in your direction.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

(V.O.) Come on, pal, you don’t (ON CAMERA) wanna do that. You said yourself, you haven’t killed anybody.

GUNMAN/”JOE”

I’m gonna need to test you for gunshot residue.

MAC TAYLOR

I collect with one of these, positive result tells me you fired your gun recently.

This could have been an accident.

No, it wasn’t an accident. I’m not gonna let you pin this murder on me.

You don’t think I know what’s going on out there? Your friends are out there trying to figure out a way to get in here without killing a lot of innocent people. They don’t give a damn about me. ‘Cause they think I’m a murderer. And you know what that means? That means they’ll put a bullet in me the first chance they get. That’s why I’m not leaving here until you prove that I didn’t pull that trigger. And if I’m not leaving, nobody’s leaving.

MAC TAYLOR

Well then get me a CT-scanner.

GUNMAN/”JOE”

What’s that?

MAC TAYLOR

It’s a kind of a lie detector, for scientists. It’ll allow me to look inside the body and see if you’re telling me the truth.

[HRT TAC OFFICERS WHEEL A CRATE TO THE BANK’S FRONT DOOR]

We hear from Mac?

Yeah, Stella just did. He couldn’t say much, but he sent over some CT scan data to perform a virtual autopsy.

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

Yeah.

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

Finally get to break in that new toy of yours.

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

[HAMMERBACK AND HAWKES SEE A “FLOATING” COMPUTERIZED IMAGE OF THE VICTIM’S BODY]

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

It looks like we’ve got two distinct wound cavities.

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

Both rounds entered the thoracic cavity between the fourth and fifth ribs. Dense tissue resulted in a great deal of fragmentation that penetrated into both the media steinum and the pleural cavity.

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

With one large projectile lodging in the inferior lobe of the right lung and a second lodging into the left ventricle of the heart.

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

The latter of which resulted in near instantaneous death.

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

Yeah.

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

Now this entrance wound is consistent with a medium-sized caliber, .45 or .38.

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

That’s weird. I only see one entry wound.

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

There’s gotta be another one. That is strange. There doesn’t appear to be a second.

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

A split wound path from a single round?

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

My first thought as well, but the permanent wound cavities are too large. And take a look at this.

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

Guy’s got more metal in him than a jewelry store.

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

Right. And based on cumulative mass estimates, I’d say we’re looking at two rounds.

DR. SHELDON HAWKES

How does someone get shot--

[CSI SHOT]

DR. SHELDON HAWKES (V.O.) (CONTINUED)

--twice in exactly the same place?

STELLA BONASERA

[INTO CELL PHONE] That’s not scientifically possible--

[JOE LISTENS ON AN EXTENSION TO MAC AND STELLA’S CONVERSATION]

[INTO TELEPHONE] Unless there was one round--

MAC TAYLOR (V.O.) (CONTINUED)

--stuck in the barrel when the trigger was pulled.

STELLA BONASERA

Well, in that case, the two bullets would be deformed in different ways, changing their aerodynamics causing them to take on different flight paths.

[CSI SHOT]

STELLA BONASERA (CONTINUED)

Maybe both rounds were shot from close range.

MAC TAYLOR

Except I got no sign of stippling or powder burns on the body.

STELLA BONASERA

Intermediate range then.

MAC TAYLOR

(V.O.) There’s no way. (ON CAMERA) Weapon’s recoil would jar the shooter’s hand enough to easily throw off a second shot. Even a highly skilled--

[CSI SHOT]

MAC TAYLOR (V.O.) (CONTINUED)

--marksman would be off by a couple of millimeters.

[BACK TO SCENE]

STELLA BONASERA

Maybe it’s not about skill or luck. Maybe it’s about the gun.

MAC TAYLOR

Was Sid able to determine caliber?

STELLA BONASERA

Yeah. Sid thinks that the murder weapon was a medium caliber. (V.O.) Is that what your suspect is holding?

MAC TAYLOR

Yeah, but my guy swears he only fired one round into the ceiling and insists there’s no way it’s his bullet inside the vic.

[JOE GIVES MAC A “THUMBS UP”]

STELLA BONASERA

(V.O.) If that’s the truth, (ON CAMERA) then there would have been three rounds fired in that bank.

MAC TAYLOR

So why didn’t any witnesses hear more than one shot?

[JOE SLAMS DOWN THE PHONE]

EXT. BANK - DAY

STELLA BONASERA

Mac?

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

What happened?

STELLA BONASERA

He hung up.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

Listen, what do you want me to do about Jackson? He’s breathing down my neck about going in.

STELLA BONASERA

Just stall him.

DETECTIVE DON FLACK

Where’re you goin’?

STELLA BONASERA

To find out how our gunman pulled off the impossible.

INT. BANK - LOBBY - DAY

GUNMAN/”JOE”

I fired one shot at that ceiling. I don’t want to have to tell you again.

MAC TAYLOR

That’s not what the evidence is telling us.

GUNMAN/”JOE”

I s--, I swear to you, I swear to you, man. I did not kill this guy!

MAC TAYLOR

Then who did?

GUNMAN/”JOE”

I don’t know!

MAC TAYLOR

What the hell is going on here, Joe? You’re not telling me everything. You got partners, don’t you? Maybe you’re the fall guy? Who was that you were talking to on the phone earlier?

GUNMAN/”JOE”

You know what? I’m, I am sick and tired of answering all your questions. Now, you go in there and you prove, you find something that proves that I did not kill this guy!

MAC TAYLOR

I only got one problem with that. Under normal circumstances I would perform an autopsy on the body to confirm cause of death, run ballistics, a bullet from your gun against the bullets inside the body.

GUNMAN/”JOE”

I don’t see the problem. [MUSIC IN] You got one of my bullets lying around here someplace.

MAC TAYLOR

Yeah, if we can find it. That still doesn’t give me the bullets inside the body. For that, I gotta send the body back to autopsy.

GUNMAN/”JOE”

Okay. So where you could conveniently find evidence that connects me to his murder. Forget it. The body is not going anywhere.

MAC TAYLOR

Well, then you’re outta luck, because I need the bullets inside the body.

[JOE HOLDS UP MAC’S RAZOR KNIFE]

GUNMAN/”JOE”

Huh? Here. Start diggin’.

--upper abdominal region. This will allow you to go underneath the ribcage.

[MAC CUTS INTO THE VICTIM’S CHEST]

DR. SID HAMMERBACK (CONTINUED)

And once you’ve made the incision, (V.O.) you’re gonna probe with your hand (ON CAMERA) into the center of the chest cavity. (V.O.) Use your fingers to feel for the heart. You should feel a hole (ON CAMERA) in that bottom left quadrant.

MAC TAYLOR

I feel it.

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

(V.O.) Now, (ON CAMERA) squeeze the tissue, and the round should slip (V.O.) out into your fingers.

MAC TAYLOR

I got it.

DR. SID HAMMERBACK

(V.O.) Good. Go back in through (ON CAMERA) the same incision, but this time feel for that right lung. (V.O.) Use the ribcage as your guide.

[MAC PLACES HIS HAND INSIDE THE INCISION]
